Carianne Johnson

Carianne Johnson was born in Trinidad and Tobago and grew up in New York City. She is a graduate of Binghamton University with a Bachelors of Arts in Africana Studies and a minor in Sociology. Her career interests involve an exploration of Urban Design, Environmental Management, Historic Preservation, and Land Use disciplines as they work together to build socially diverse communities. She actively seeks opportunities that reflect this commitment to social and civic responsibility; from a Groupwork Camps volunteer site coordinator, to a Volunteer Group Facilitator with the Department of Justice’s Buffalo Weed and Seed program.

To this end, her graduate research examines the social implications of the designs of cities, particularly the quality of public spaces in low income communities. As a Fellow with the Center for Urban Studies, she was a part of a team that developed a curriculum framework for teaching the fundamentals of Urban Planning to elementary-aged school children. In addition to the Urban Design Project graduate assistant, she is Graduate Student Senator for the Graduate Planning Student Association (GPSA) and one of the GPSA's student representatives to the American Planning Association (APA).
