The Buffalo Urban Retail Core Design Competition,
By Robert G. Shibley, with a history of Lafayette Square and vicinity by
Elizabeth Cromley. (1988)
Design is part of the process of city making, but it can also be a process of inquiry and investigation about what kind of cities we would like to make. Such was the nature of a competition sponsored by the City of Buffalo in the Fall of 1986 - to explore the design possibilities for reviving the retail core of downtown Buffalo. This volume includes background on the contest site, the history of Lafayette Square, selections from the winning designs, a content analysis and critique of the ideas in all 52 submissions. Included are 196 historic views, recent photos, maps, plans, sketches, and renderings.
